20 had spent more than $8.2 million, much of it on an advertising blitz, according to state campaign finance records. By contrast, a coalition of environmental groups supporting Question 2 had collectively spent about $900,000. The opposition has been largely funded by supermarket chains, which would have to deal with the added volume of extra containers being returned, and the Washington-based American Beverage Association, which lobbies for soft drink companies. A TV ad run by opponents that claimed 90 percent of Massachusetts residents have access to curbside recycling was fiercely challenged by backers of the ballot question, who cite state figures showing that only 47.5 percent of cities and towns, covering about 63 percent of the state's population, offer curbside recycling. "They went on the air and lied," said Domenitz.

Milpitas: Body found at recycling center - San Jose Mercury News

image "I love this." David Herberholz, director of the Solid Waste and Recycling Division, said the city has boosted the amount recycled by weight by 25 percent from June 2013 to June 2014, although the city had anticipated a 30-60 percent increase under the new program. The city has also reduced the amount of trash sent to the incinerator by 16 percent or 13,511 tons. "In our waste and recycling programs, we are moving in the right direction, a positive direction, that being that our waste is declining and our recycling is increasing," Herberholz said. A neighborhood breakdown released by the city shows more recycling in southwest Minneapolis and less recycling in north Minneapolis. The city is planning an educational campaign to help increase recycling rates across the city. City workers said they're planning to reach across language and cultural barriers to help people understand how the system works. "We're looking to drill down to the neighborhood groups...and actually go out there and target some education to get people that maybe aren't recycling as much or aren't recycling at all to see how easy it is in the program, and help us increase that recycling rate," Herberholz.

This Obscure Legal Dispute Could Cost McDonald's And Other Fast-Food Companies Billions Of Dollars - Yahoo Finance

SEIU members protesting Maps The district's board unanimously approved the program in February. It will have district ratepayers sorting their refuse for the first time by placing organics such as food scraps and gardening clippings into a second cart. The 570,000 square-foot facility was built in 1917 and was used for manufacturing for nearly a century. It is located near many homes and a school. Gattarello represented to the lessor that paper and cardboard waste would be recycled at the facility. In July 2011, a company estimated removing asbestos from the facility would cost $1.5 million.

Lileks: The smelly curbside Bin of Virtue | Star Tribune

image Though the case itself is relatively mundane, the outcome could set a precedent that would make fast-food chains legally responsible for workers who had previously been the liability of their franchisees. Experts say that such a ruling could cost the fast-food industry billions of dollars and alter the power dynamic in a long-running struggle between McDonald's and its workers . The case revolves around whether the court will overturn a 30-year-old legal ruling that says companies can't be held liable for unfair employment practices toward workers that the company is not directly in charge of hiring and firing includingthe nearly 8 million American workers employed by franchise businesses ranging from car dealerships to restaurants. While it might say McDonald's, Burger King, or Taco Bell on their name tags, the overwhelming majority of workers at these chains are actually hired and fired by franchisees independent business owners who pay the franchiser a fee in exchange for the rights to use their recipes, food supplies, business model, and marketing materials. In the case at hand between the waste-management company Browning-Ferris Industries and the Teamsters, a US labor union with 1.4 million members the NLRB very well could issue a ruling that fast-food industry groups fear would make McDonald's and other chains more vulnerable to unionization and damage the appeal of franchising.

Man indicted for violating clean air act | Norwalk Reflector

image Well, if it was alive at some point, it counts, unless it looked up when you called its name. But there are some peculiar notes. Acceptable: Tissues, cotton swabs and Q-tips (paper stem only). Excuse me. Can this bit about the Q-tips be left open for gross misinterpretation? Cant you just see someone (who doesnt know about the Q-tips with plastic stems) sitting down and razoring off the cotton part, wondering why cotton swabs are OK, but the cotton-swab part of a Q-tip isnt? Its like saying Bell Peppers are acceptable, but the seeds must be removed and placed in a separate bag. Some people would do it. Also good: Wood chopsticks, popsicle sticks and toothpicks. Again, fine, but the habit of walking out of a restaurant with a satisfied smile, prying broccoli from betwixt a molar with a sharp object, has fallen from favor.

Changes to landfill make disposal easier - Laramie Boomerang Online

image City manager Pete Pyrzenski presented data to the city council at its Monday work session showing that city residents recycled 24 tons of materials during July 17 percent of total garbage for the month. Thats pretty good for a start-up program, Pyrzenski commented. We would have to pay almost $28 a ton (at the landfill). Essentially, we met the 15-percent weight reduction standard, which is outstanding. Commerce began curbside recycling through Waste Pro in May. The city manager said the city is experiencing a progressive increase in participation therefore, the amount of recycling is going up.

Stearns gives overview of Rockingham recycling facility's possible new layout - Brattleboro Reformer

image The most obvious change is the new weighing method. Instead of using a tape measure to determine the cubic yardage of trash, the person drives onto a large scale, where the vehicle and its contents are weighed. Then, most people will go and dump inside the bale building, said Brooks Webb, solid waste manager. Before, people had to go to the pit and dump it in the mud, wind and rain. Now, you just back in and put (the garbage) right on the concrete floor. While the pricing method is different, the average user should not see much of a difference in cost, Webb said.

image During the ceremony held at the annual New Mexico Recycling Coalition's state conference Brunner said, "This funding will accomplish two things, one support recycling efforts around the state and second create jobs." Brunner added, "Recycling various items is good for our environment but it is also an economic driver." Brunner USDA Rural Development provided a $30,000 Rural Business Enterprise Grant which will be used to develop small-scale recycling business including the collection of recyclables to the creation of businesses that will be able to create products that would end up in a land fill. The funding will also pay for technical assistance to business owners that are in the process of launching their recycling businesses. Examples of small-scale business models include taking mattresses and turning them into dog beds, providing recycling collection services to businesses and households, or taking glass and creating recycled-content countertops, tile, or art pieces. These communities were selected based on the success of current recycling programs, and the potential for the area to grow and expand recycling businesses. President Obama's plan for rural America has brought about historic investment and resulted in stronger rural communities.

Pros Elimination options: Once the program has identified unsecured information on your computer, you can decide how you'd like to take care of it. For instance, you can just send it to the Recycling Bin, which is a good choice if you're not sure you want to permanently delete it yet. Alternately, if you know you do want to eliminate the information permanently, you can use the Shredder feature, which makes it completely unrecoverable.
